Spanish Minister of Culture declares war against piracy

On September 9, 2015, the Ministry of Culture had a meeting with representatives of the Coalición de Creadores (an association publishing piracy studies) in order to study together with the industry what new copyright measures can be put in place.

Will the UN kill the IGF?

The UN Internet Governance Forum was the most important product of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). It was supposed to serve as a bridge between the private sector-based Internet governance institutions (such as ICANN, IETF, ISOC, and the RIRs) and the world of national governments and the United Nations, a meeting ground where stakeholder silos would dissolve and fruitful dialogue would take place.

The multistakeholder basis of the IGF, however, may be breaking down. The UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) seems to be claiming authority over the IGF as its own project.

How far can ICANN go to escape the nation-state? ICANN 60 (held in Abu Dhabi October 28 – Nov 3rd) made important progress on what has become known as “the jurisdiction issue”. ICANN is taking steps to reduce or eliminate the effect that U.S. sanctions against foreign governments would have on ordinary Internet users and businesses in sanctioned countries. It will also introduce choice of law provisions in their registry and registrar contracts, and open up continuing discussions of whether additional immunities are needed.

During the Slovenian Internet Governance Forum (SloIGF) which took place on 17 October 2017, public education and awareness were the keywords both during the opening session, as well as during the three panel discussions on: open technologies & open society, extremism & rights an liberties on the Internet, privacy & security in the Internet of the future.
